Garage Door Emergency? The 5-Step Diagnostic Guide
Identify garage door noises and failures quickly. Know when it's safe to DIY and when to call for 24/7 emergency service.
If you heard a loud bang while the door was moving (or just heard it from the kitchen), your torsion spring likely reached its cycle limit.
Critical Warning:
Do NOT attempt to pull the emergency release cord if the door is open, as it may crash down. A broken spring makes the door extremely heavy and dangerous.
Symptoms:
- Loud bang or popping sound
- Door won't open or closes too fast
- Visible gap in the spring above the door
- One side of door hangs lower than the other
If your door starts to close and then pops back up, check the small "eyes" at the bottom of your tracks. If one is blinking red, it's out of alignment.
DIY Fix - Try This First:
- Wipe the lens with a soft cloth to remove dust or cobwebs
- Gently nudge the sensor until the light is solid (not blinking)
- Make sure nothing is blocking the beam between the two sensors
- Test the door - it should close normally
If the sensors won't align or the light stays red, the wiring may be damaged. We can diagnose and fix sensor issues same-day.
A grinding noise is usually caused by worn-out steel rollers or a lack of lubrication on the tracks and hinges.
Common Causes:
- Worn steel rollers (replace with quiet nylon rollers)
- Dry or rusty hinges and tracks
- Loose hardware vibrating during operation
- Worn belt or chain on opener
Replacing steel rollers with nylon rollers can significantly quiet the door. We can upgrade your entire door during a service call.
If your door is hanging at an angle or you can see the rollers have come out of the track, this is a serious safety hazard.
Do NOT operate the door!
An off-track door can fall suddenly, causing injury or property damage. Disconnect the opener and call for emergency service immediately.
If your cables are frayed, your spring is in two pieces, or the door is hanging crooked (off-track), the door is a safety hazard.
