Can I put my garage door back on the track myself?

We don't recommend it. Cables and springs are under heavy tension, and an off-track door can fall without warning. Don't run the opener, keep people and cars out from under the door, and call us.

Why did my garage door come off track?

The most common causes are a broken or slipped lift cable, backing into the door, a bent or loose track, worn rollers, or the opener pushing a door that was already binding.

What is the difference between a broken cable and a broken spring?

Springs carry the door's weight; cables connect that force to the bottom of the door. A broken spring usually makes the door very heavy. A broken cable usually makes the door hang crooked or drop on one side. A spring break often damages the cables too, so we check both.

Do you replace one cable or both?

Usually both. Cables wear at the same rate, and replacing them as a pair keeps the door level. We also check the drums, bottom brackets and rollers while we're there.

Can a bent track be repaired or does it need replacing?

Small bends can often be straightened and re-secured. A kinked or badly bent section is safer to replace. We'll show you which it is before we start.

Signs of a cable or track problem

If you see any of these, stop using the opener and keep clear of the door.

Door is crooked or hanging on one side

One cable has come off its drum or snapped, so only one side is holding the door. This is the most common sign of a cable problem.

A cable is loose, frayed or dangling

Lift cables run from the bottom corners of the door up to the drums. Rust and fraying at the bottom bracket usually show up before a full break.

Rollers have popped out of the track

Often caused by backing into the door, a bent track or a broken cable letting one side drop. The door can bind or jam halfway.

Track is bent or pulling away from the wall

Loose brackets or an impact can bend the vertical track. Even a small bend can make rollers jump out.

Grinding, scraping or jerky movement

Worn rollers, a dry or misaligned track, or a cable starting to unwind. Catching it early keeps a small repair from becoming an off-track door.

The door came down hard

If a cable or spring lets go while the door is moving, it can slam shut and damage the bottom panel and track.
