Spring just broke? Do this first.
- Stop using the opener. It can't lift the door's full weight and can burn out.
- If the door is open, leave it open. Don't pull the red emergency release.
- Keep kids and pets away from the door and the spring above it.
- Call (916) 218-4931. We answer 24/7.
Signs your garage door spring is broken
Most homeowners notice one of these before they ever look at the spring.
A loud bang from the garage
A torsion spring under full tension releases with a sound like a gunshot. It often happens when nobody is touching the door.
A visible gap in the spring
Look at the spring above the door. A 1–2 inch gap between coils means it has snapped.
The door feels like it weighs hundreds of pounds
Springs carry the weight, not the opener. With a broken spring a standard double door can weigh 150–250 lbs or more in your hands.
The door lifts a few inches and stops
The opener senses the load and quits. Many openers also flash or click when this happens.
Loose or dangling cables
When the spring lets go, the cables lose tension and can jump off the drums.
The door closes too fast or crooked
With one side unsupported the door can drop hard or bind in the track.

Torsion vs. extension springs
Torsion springs
Mounted on a bar above the door. Most newer homes in Roseville, Rocklin and Lincoln have them.
- Smoother, more controlled lift
- Longer life and easier to balance
- Heavy custom doors may use four springs
Extension springs
Run along the horizontal tracks on each side. Common on older homes and lighter doors.
- Must have safety cables run through them
- Replaced in pairs to keep the door level
- Many doors can be converted to torsion
How we replace your springs
Sized to your door
We match wire size, inside diameter and length to the door's weight and drums. No guessing, no "close enough."
Full safety check
Cables, drums, bearings, rollers and opener force settings get checked while we're there, because a spring break often damages them too.
Upfront price
You get the price before we start. Parts and labor are covered by our warranty.
Standard or high-cycle springs?
One cycle = one open and one close. Here's roughly how long a 10,000-cycle spring lasts.
| Daily use | Cycles per year | 10,000-cycle spring lasts about |
|---|---|---|
| 2 cycles a day | 730 | 13+ years |
| 4 cycles a day | 1,460 | 7 years |
| 8 cycles a day | 2,920 | 3.4 years |
If your garage is the main way in and out of the house, ask about high-cycle springs.
