Common opener problems and what causes them

A few of these you can check yourself before you call.

Door goes down, then reverses

Usually the safety sensors at the bottom of the track are dirty, bumped out of line or wired loose. Both sensor lights should be solid, not blinking.

Remote or keypad stopped working

Start with the battery. If that is not it, the remote may need reprogramming or the lock/vacation button on the wall control may be on.

Motor hums but the door does not move

Often a stripped drive gear, a broken spring, or a door that is locked or disconnected from the trolley.

Opener runs, door stops partway

Travel limits or force settings are off, or the door has become hard to lift because a spring is wearing out.

Nothing happens at all

Check the outlet, the GFCI and the breaker. If power is fine, the logic board or wall control may have failed.

Loud grinding or rattling

Chain drives get noisy as they wear. A belt drive or wall-mount unit is much quieter, which matters with a bedroom over the garage.

Door suddenly feels very heavy, or you heard a loud bang? That's usually a broken spring, not the opener.

Choosing a new opener

Chain drive

Durable and budget-friendly. Louder, so best for detached garages or garages away from bedrooms.

Belt drive

Much quieter. A popular pick for homes with a bedroom or living space over the garage.

Wall-mount

Mounts beside the door instead of the ceiling. Frees overhead space for storage racks and high ceilings. See the LiftMaster 84505R.

California requires battery backup. Every new opener installed in the state since July 2019 must keep working in a power outage. Every opener we install meets that rule.
